RICHARD JOHNSON

Richard is the firm's Chairperson and is responsible for all Partnership business as well as being a member of our Management Board. 

Richard develops and manages IP portfolios for clients in the UK and abroad, contributing to and assisting in the formulation and execution of their IP strategies.

Richard also handles patent prosecution at the European Patent Office and UK Intellectual Property Office for a wide range of clients.

Areas of Expertise

  • Medical Devices, especially in relation to electrosurgery and surgical endoscopy
  • Computer data storage and management
  • Mobile handset technology, especially in relation to fingerprint recognition and rapid charging
  • AI-based technology, especially in relation to affective computing

Clients

Richard’s clients are primarily based in the UK, US and China. His main clients are a UK-based medical device company, a UK-based affective computing company, a US-based data storage corporation, a US-based medical device corporation and a China-based mobile phone manufacturer.

Background

MPhys in physics from the University of Oxford.

Richard joined Mewburn Ellis in 2001, qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2005. He joined the partnership in 2008. 

Richard is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), and a regular visitor to both China and the US.
